Email Newsletters: Overview

Back to posts

An email newsletter is a great way to keep people who are interested in your business up-to-date with all your latest news. Earlier we covered the benefits of sending email newsletters, as well as some legal information when sending them (read Email Impressions). Often you’ll start out with a few email addresses and send them like a normal email, but once you start getting more people who want to receive your email newsletter it can be a problem.

If you send too many emails out at one time from your normal email account the email server can decide it is spam and either block it or put it in the receivers spam folder where they may not see it. You could send a few at a time, but that can become a time consuming process and get confusing. So what can you do?

Using an external emarketing tool will help greatly.

If you have a content management system for your website you may have an option to send email newsletters from within the control panel. You will need to contact your webdesigner to find out.

If you don’t have a content management system there are a number of free and paid for emarketing tools you can use. One I suggest is called MailChimp which has both a free and paid version depending how many subscribers and emails you are sending out each month.

Emarketing tools will vary in what extras they offer, some will allow you to link your newsletters to your social media but they should all do the following which sending from your normal email can’t:

Send multiple emails without being marked as spam. As mentioned above sending out multiple emails at once can cause email servers to think you are sending spam. Emarketing tools will send a few at a time, so no matter how many people are on your subscribers list you can press send and it will do the rest while you go on with other work.

HTML, text or online. Some email programs won’t show images, emarketing tools will allow your subscribers to see your newsletter with ot without images depending what their email client allows. The newsletter will also link to an online version if it doesn’t work properly for any reason.

Tracking how effective your emails are. Through an emarketing tool you are able to see how many people have opened your newsletter, clicked on links, shared the newsletter with friends and more. This is a great way to find out how effective your newsletters are so you can refine them over time for the best result.
