Using Google AdWords Keyword Tool
Back to posts
If you’re organising a website, or looking at revamping an existing site, one of the main things on your mind will be “How can I get found on Google?”
Google has a tool called ‘Google AdWords: Keyword Tool”, while it is set up to show how many people are advertising through AdWords with specific keywords it is still very helpful when trying to figure out what people are actually searching for.
For example, if you sell clothing for children you would be able to use this tool to find out that people search for ‘kids clothing’ a lot more then ‘childrens clothing’. Or if you want to focus on creating websites you can find out if more people search for ‘websites’ or web sites’. So when writing the content of your website you can keep consistancy throughout the text, and focus on getting Google search results at the same time.
So how do you use it?
First go to: https://adwords.google.com/keywordtool
Type in the search term (single word or phrase) you would like to focus on, you can type in variations, each one has to be on a seperate line.
If your website is mainly focussed towards Australian visitors make sure the Locations is set to Australia (to change it click on Advanced options and select Australia).
Type in the visable word (you will only have to do this once per visit to the keyword tool)
Press Search
A list of words will appear below.
This list gives you quite a bit of information:
- The first column shows the search term. The search term you typed in will appear at the top, with a list of other search terms that may be relevant below, which may give you some ideas of other search terms to aim for.
- The second column is set up for AdWords, it shows if there is a low, medium or high competition rate if you are looking at purchasing an AdWords campaign for this search term. But it can also give an indicator on how many other websites are aiming for this search term without paying.
- The third column shows Global Monthly Searches. This is an average over the past year how many people in the world have searched for that term each month.
- The forth column shows Local Monthly Searches, which shows the average amount of searches each month within Australia (or whichever location chosen in Advanced options).
- The last column shows Local Search Trends, this is a little bar graph that gives you a visual month comparison of searches.
I’ve already mentioned that this tool can help you define consistency of spellings through your website. It can also help you find words you may not have thought of, or give up on others, there is no point spending a lot of your time for a term that only 10 people search for each month.
So check out the Google AdWords keyword tool, it’s very useful!
