Scam: ATO Email

Back to posts

Today the Herald Sun warned of a scam that is targetting people at tax time. The email will appear to come from the ATO and direct you to a fake ATO website asking for your details to be submitted to them. Giving them these details can expose you to identity fraud.

As quoted below, the ATO will never send you an email asking for details so it is best to ignore the email altogether.

Excerpt from the Herald Sun
“Scammers have been sending out hoax emails with a link that directs you to a fake version of the ATO website. If you input your details into the scammer’s site, you’re exposing yourself to identity fraud, and that can cost you big bucks.

Suffice to say, the ATO will never send you an email requesting your personal details, nor will any bank (although a Nigerian prince may randomly call on your help from time to time).

But don’t let this deter you from using e-tax. If you’ve got a simple tax situation, it’s the best way to lodge.”
