Search Engine Optimisation and Linking
There are many different ways to help your website be listed on search engines. Some of these are hidden within the coding which I will do while making your website. Some can be done by you after your website is live.
When I meet with you I will fi nd out who your website is aimed at, whether it be businesses in your local area, clients all over Autralia, or around the world. I will also find out what keywords you would like to be found under.
Keywords are linked to what people type into Google or Yahoo when they do a search. Search engines change how websites are found to be relevant from time to time. At the moment the most important part can be done by yourself after the website is live. Internal links. These are links to your website from other websites. The catch is they have to be relevant to what your website is about or selling.
Links you want:
- Sites like the Shire of Yarra Ranges have an online business directory that lists your business
and website details for people wanting to shop locally.
- If you have a supplier, fi nd out if they link to businesses who sell their product.
- You can even start a blog and write once a week or month about information in your industry or
about your new products and link to them.
Links you don’t want:
- Farming sites, these are websites that do not have any content on them, just random links to
any website that submits to them. Search engines like Google do not like them as they provide no
content or helpful information to users.
- Irrelevant websites, there is no point in getting a link from a fl orist if you are a mechanic.
Some search engines such as Google can take a while for websites to be listed, up to 6 months in some cases. This is because there are thousands of websites out there, and a lot of them try to cheat to get a higher listing then other websites more relevant to a keyword.
Usually when your website is listed it appears a few pages down the search for a particular keyword, but over time if it is found to be relevant and the above steps are used it will gain a higher listing and be easier for people to fi nd.
