Karen Phillips – Mt Evelyn History Group

“Joy Carrick worked with the Mount Evelyn History Group on the graphic design of our booklet Aborigines in the Yarra Valley and Northern Dandenongs (2011).
The booklet is aimed at a wide age range, from upper primary to adult, and needed to be clear and appealing to all. It also presented the design challenge of an A4 Landscape format and a variety of illustration styles (colour and black & white photos, maps, drawings).
Joy succeeded through subtle use of colour and a well-spaced layout. She was able to transform a photo of an outdoor mural into a very effective cover. The result is a book that has been widely praised for its immediate visual appeal and that ‘almost sells itself’.
Joy was able to advise on technicalities such as appropriate fonts and paper stock. She also made the publishing task easier by liaising with the printer and clarifying the process for us. It was always a pleasure to work with Joy, who remained unflappable and endlessly patient with our panic attacks and last-minute updates.
I would recommend Joy to anyone venturing on the journey of publishing a book.”
